yoga clases edinburghYoga helped me to heal many injuries giving me insight and tools to help others through my teaching. It has helped me manage stress while I was working as a journalist. It is still helping me to deal with quirks of motherhood.

Teaching and practising for more than a decade I’ve trained and worked with many different Yoga styles and traditions – Hatha, Power, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Restorative Yoga but the one I treasure and teach is Forrest Yoga. Developed by Ana Forrest while she was working through her own healing it is highly intelligent practice that is open to everyone regardless of age of physical capabilities. I was on my own healing path when I first came into contact with Forrest Yoga. Not being able to walk, sit or stand without pain I was very far from doing any yoga. To be honest all the doctor and therapists I saw advised against it – also they were everything but optimistic about will I ever recover from pelvic and back injury. As I was not able to move without pain all dynamic yoga styles where a big NO for me.

About the time I was ready to give up on yoga, Jambo Truong, one of Ana’s Guardians came to do a three day workshop. I went for a super silly reason – when thinking about my injury to me it felt problem came from from the feet and I needed to root myself. Literally. So, as I sometimes do I searched online for forest yoga, hoping to find some grounding inspirations connecting yoga with the most rooted thing I know – trees. What came up was an interview with Ana talking about pillars of Forrest Yoga – Breath, Strength, Integrity, Spirit and there it was – importance of active feet in the practice. Jambo coming to Edinburgh couldn’t be a coincidence so I booked and at the beginning of class listed all my injuries wondering in my head what am I going to do in this 2 hour class. There was loads, most things modified so I can do them. After those three days prolapse was almost gone and the pain when moving reduced so much I still didn’t believe it was real.

Doing a three day workshop with Ana herself was the only logical next step. Every word and every cue she said made a significant difference in my practice – through her guidance I was able to cure my own body. Precious and inspiring gift that lead me to finish Advance Forrest Yoga Teacher Training and to walk that path ever since, pain free. A gift I believe every person should have and know. As sacred as a realising our own bodies are a gift. I came from a place of anger for not being able to do this or that, even anger for the pain I had, to a fulfilling coalition – myself being able to listen to what my body needs and doing just that, no procrastination, no self-mutilating thoughts, just the will to evolve.

Forrest Yoga is a wonderful tool and the most therapeutic style of Yoga I know. Safe, strengthening practice that can be tailored for every practitioner. I could talk for hours about all the benefits and all there is to gain from this practice but I’ve found personal experience is always the best ‘spokesperson’.
